Exhibition Schedule
The Westmoreland Museum of American Art is pleased to announce the international tour of Born of Fire: The Valley of Work. The power and drama of industry in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from 1900 - 1950 is expressed through these paintings and works on paper, as seen through the eyes of southwestern Pennsylvania and national artists. Organized by the Westmoreland, this traveling exhibition features 60 works of art from the Museum's collection.
The exhibition features an interactive kiosk with touch screen technology, which allows visitors to view documentary footage; hear oral histories from steelworkers; and listen to the folk music of the era.
Born of Fire: The Valley of Work is just one component of a larger project that includes the following, all of which accompany the exhibition:
- A 160-page catalogue of the paintings and works on paper, which includes the history of Big Steel by professors Edward Muller (University of Pittsburgh) and Joel Tarr (Carnegie Mellon University);
- A music CD featuring the songs of the era, updated for today's audiences and performed by the NewLanders, an eclectic Pittsburgh folk music group;
- A 90-minute documentary film features the entrepreneurial spirit of the region during the height of the Big Steel Era and the art and music of the period. The documentary, created by award winning producer Bill Mosher;
- Educational programs and lesson plans relating to the art, music and history of the Big Steel Era; and
- Museum shop products, including note cards, magnets, t-shirts, and posters, are available at wholesale through An American Marketplace - the Shop The Westmoreland.
